About the FLSR:The Foreign Language Student Residence provides a unique opportunity for students to enhance and refine language skills. The on-campus complex consists of 25 apartments for men and women, learning nine different languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
Residents develop confidence and fluency practicing the language daily. They pledge to speak only the target language in the apartment with their roomates, one of whom is a student native speaker. Together they plan meals, shop, cook, eat and clean up while communicating in the target language.
Each apartment is furnished with a dishwasher, microwave, oak table and chairs, couch, chairs, television and VCR. In addition, each apartment has satellite hook-ups that bring in the target language programming and give access to a variety of foreign language video cassettes, games, newspapers, and magazines.
The complex itself contributes to a feeling of community. Large multi-purpose rooms offer a gathering spot for socials, activities and church meetings. Laundry facilities are available as well. The Foreign Language Student Residence is located at 1950 North Temple View Drive (across the street from the MTC).
Of course, fun can be understood in any language. Outside sports courts and lawn areas beckon students to enjoy time away from the classroom pursuing basketball, volleyball, Frisbees, and sunshine. But, the most lasting fun comes from friendships with students from all over the world.
How to sign up:
BYU On-Campus Housing requires a $25 application fee and a $100 deposit before a housing contract can be signed. If you currently have a BYU Housing contract, the fee and deposit will be transferred to your Foreign Language Student Residence contract. The BYU Housing deadline is April 1, for Spring or Summer and Fall/Winter contracts, however, the FLSR deadline is March 1. It is recommended that you submit your application in January because many languages fill well before the FLSR deadline.
