About the FLSR Computers:
Every apartment in the complex is furnished with one computer, a Compaq DeskPro PII 350 MHz with 192 MB of RAM running Windows 2000 Professional. All computers have working floppy, CD-ROM and Zip-disk drives. There are many useful software programs installed, such as Office XP, WP Office 2002, Mozilla, Internet Explorer, etc.
Software:
The general guideline for the computers is this: do not install anything on them. No, it is not a "rule"; rather it is a strong suggestion. There are a few reasons why, but the main one being that it is in your best interest. Relatively speaking, these are not fast computers. They have plenty of memory, but the processor and hard disk are rather sluggish. The more programs you install and run, the slower it will go. Along those lines, the more programs you have running, the more likely your computer is to crash. Thus is the nature of the beast. Another reason is adware and spyware. If you don't want annoying popup windows every five seconds, keep in mind that most shareware and freeware programs do include some sort of spyware or adware, so think twice before you install something. Remember that these are not your computers. Your roommates have to use them too, and they have been provided by the program so that you complete assignments and research without going to campus. These are BYU computers, and as such, anyone caught abusing this privilege will be referred to the Honor Code Office. Examples of abuse include: 1. Transferring, storing, or viewing pornographic material of any type. 2. Use of the computers to probe or crack security systems, including passwords, or to intercept information intended only for others. 3. Sending mass, commercial, obscene, or harrassing email or usenet news posts.
Viruses:
Take every precaution to avoid viruses. Each computer is running Norton Anti-Virus, which will periodically check for viruses. You may receive a message from Norton from time to time.
Computer Care:
The Resident Facilitator of each apartment is responsible for the care of the computer. No food or drinks should be consumed at or near the computer. Neither the computer nor any of its peripherals are to be moved out of the apartment. There are no exceptions.
Backup:
Computers crash from time to time. Please keep multiple copies of everything that you don't want to lose. If you don't backup, you'll be sorry.
About the TV's, VCR's, and DVD Players
Feel free to move the computer, TV, VCR, etc. around the apartment. They cannot under any circumstances, however, leave the apartment. There are no exceptions.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mitch.
